Our long-term plan to grow responsibly with what we have

Stansted Airport has connected the local area to the world bringing more choice in travel to passengers and multiple benefits to the local economy.

We’re proud of where we are and have always taken our responsibilities seriously:

As the biggest local employer – supporting 12,000 good local jobs

As a source of income to thousands of local businesses that supply us

As a supporter of hundreds of local community projects and organisations

And, most importantly, we are managing our growth in a sustainable way.

Today, almost 30 million passengers use the airport every year. But this will change over the next 15-20 years. So it’s only sensible to start planning now.

With an extended terminal and airlines ordering bigger, more efficient planes we could see up to 51 million passengers using the airport by 2040.

This will bring many more good local jobs and better connections to the world.

But we know it also increases pressure on local infrastructure – unless there’s a plan.

That’s why we have submitted plans to increase the passenger cap to 51m.

You can submit comments to Uttlesford District Council by emailing: airportplanning@uttlesford.gov.uk or writing to: Planning, Uttlesford District Council, London Road, Saffron Walden, CB11 4ER. Planning Ref No: UTT/25/1542/FUL.

This will help us put in place the measures now that will reduce that pressure later – on traffic, air quality and noise.

Infrastructure and then growth.
Not the other way round.

Our plans are based on making the best use of what we have – a single runway within the same boundaries and no more flights than currently allowed.

Stansted’s long-term plan to deliver sustainable growth in the future, includes:

As part of this comprehensive plan, we are looking to increase the current passenger limit to 51 million so that we are prepared for the future. The existing limit on the number of flights allowed will not change.

We have submitted a planning application to Uttlesford District Council, and are asking residents, local businesses and passengers for their support, so we can all benefit from the jobs, training and access to the world that makes our area special.
