Stansted Airport has connected the local area to the world bringing more choice in travel to passengers and multiple benefits to the local economy.
We’re proud of where we are and have always taken our responsibilities seriously:

As a source of income to thousands of local businesses that supply us
As a supporter of hundreds of local community projects and organisations
And, most importantly, we are managing our growth in a sustainable way.
With an extended terminal and airlines ordering bigger, more efficient planes we could see up to 51 million passengers using the airport by 2040.
This will bring many more good local jobs and better connections to the world.
But we know it also increases pressure on local infrastructure – unless there’s a plan.
That’s why we have submitted plans to increase the passenger cap to 51m.

This will help us put in place the measures now that will reduce that pressure later – on traffic, air quality and noise.
Infrastructure and then growth.
Not the other way round.
Our plans are based on making the best use of what we have – a single runway within the same boundaries and no more flights than currently allowed.
Stansted’s long-term plan to deliver sustainable growth in the future, includes:
- Improvements to M11 Junction 8 to reduce congestion
- Funds for local bus services, roads and tackling fly-parking
- Working with train operators to improve the Stansted Express
- Airport infrastructure powered by 100% renewable energy helping to achieve its Net Zero target requirement by 2038.
- Working with partners to nearly double the size of Stansted Airport College so they can train more local young people
- Half of all passenger journeys by public transport, to relieve pressure on local roads
- Over 4,500 more good local jobs
As part of this comprehensive plan, we are looking to increase the current passenger limit to 51 million so that we are prepared for the future. The existing limit on the number of flights allowed will not change.
